Climbing into the light: the glass bricks staircase at Ellison Studios

In Sydney’s Waterloo design district, Ellison Studios has opened its first true headquarters. At its heart is a staircase of Polished Clear glass bricks from the Glass collection, inspired by the heritage of Venetian glassmakers: part installation, part infrastructure, it diffuses light and gives rhythm to the space of the Designer Suite.

The first impression is glass

Some projects treat material not as a finishing choice but as the idea itself. The glass brick staircase in Ellison Studios’ new Sydney headquarters is one of them.
Ellison Studios has opened its first headquarters in Sydney’s Waterloo design district. It is both a creative studio and a showroom, with an appointment-only Designer Suite for industry professionals, their clients, and private customers. Here the Ellison collection sits alongside pieces by local and international designers. The guiding principle, in the words of founder and CEO Leigh McKeown, is finding the balance between magic and logic. The space had to tell the brand’s story, inspire the team, and work for the community.

As soon as you step through the door, the tone is set by a staircase built with our glass bricks from the Glass collection, in the Polished Clear finish. McKeown calls it “the luminous heart of the studio”. The project is a shared piece of work with Ellison Studios: part installation, part infrastructure.
Glass does three things here at once: it diffuses natural light, creates intimacy without feeling heavy, and gives the structure its rhythm. “Its shifting translucency,” McKeown explains, “turns the simple act of climbing the stairs into a continuous dialogue with light.”

The Glass collection draws on a specific heritage: that of the Venetian glassmakers, who for centuries joined beauty and function in a city built on water, bridges, and light. The collection translates their distinctive qualities into architectural form: transparency, luminosity, and refinement.

In the Designer Suite, that heritage meets a contemporary language and stays understated: the glass works by subtraction, it lets the light through and the space does the rest.
