Surry Hills Village: Urban Reclamation & Material Harmony
When architecture commits to a conscious dialogue with its urban surroundings, the result is a micro-universe where every element exists in harmony with its context. At Surry Hills Village in Sydney, our bricks played a central role in bringing this vision to life.

Located in one of Sydney’s most vibrant neighborhoods, the site had long been closed off to the local community. Its transformation marks a major act of urban reclamation—an achievement celebrated at the 2026 Australian National Architecture Awards, where the project claimed top honors in both Multiple Housing and Urban Design.
Brought to fruition by a joint venture of industry leaders—led by TOGA Group alongside architecture practice SJB, heritage specialists Studio Prineas, and urban design experts ASPECT Studios—the development redefines the site for the communities of Surry Hills and Redfern.

Spanning over 12,000 m², this "neighborhood within a neighborhood" unfolds along a newly created pedestrian laneway. It is organized into seven distinct "villages" that seamlessly integrate residential apartments, terrace homes, boutique retail, hospitality venues, and a restored heritage landmark.
Our bricks contributed directly to the refined, context-aware aesthetic of the development, featured across two of the primary buildings in two distinct formulations:
- **Roma Standard **chosen for its clean silhouette, homogeneous tone, and timeless architectural clarity.
- Custom Smoked Blend MIB + LOFB + MHB: a bespoke mix crafted to impart a distinctive, tactile identity to the building framing one side of the precinct.

Every spatial element was treated with meticulous care, combining distinct architectural personalities into a cohesive whole framed by pocket parks and rooftop gardens. Through innovative approaches to spatial separation, natural ventilation, panoramic orientation, and shared amenities, Surry Hills Village sets a new benchmark for high-end multi-family living—effortlessly balancing private sanctuary with vibrant social connection.
